I was born and raised in Moses Lake, Washington, and have more or less lived in the State of Washington all of my life (other than a few months trying out Colorado and California after college). My dad was a middle school teacher, and my mom ran the household, taking care of myself and my three siblings. We grew up in the country, with about 70 fruit trees, and several generations of dogs, cats, cows, horses, mules, a stubborn donkey, and even had a few seasons of raising pheasants and quail. During summers, if I wasn't mowing lawns, I was playing basketball.
After graduating from Moses Lake High School, I attended Whitworth College in Spokane, and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Following that, I attended the University of Washington School of Law in Seattle. After law school, I worked one year for a Superior Court Judge in Snohomish County. I enjoyed my law school experience, but was eager to get back to Eastern Washington.
After law school, I married Heather. She and I had grown up together in Moses Lake, but didn't start dating until after college. She graduated from Washington State University, and her parents were raised in Uniontown and Colton, in Whitman County. Eventually, an associate attorney position opened in Pullman. We moved here in January 2008, and have been here ever since. Heather works in the Pullman School District. We have 3 children, ages 15 through 10.
I care deeply about justice. The position of Superior Court Judge is too important to be entrusted to a candidate who does not have a deep understanding of the types of cases which routinely come before the Court. I have handled hundreds of felony criminal cases and family law cases, both of which are the majority of cases heard before the Court. I have had several criminal jury trials. As an attorney in Superior Court, I have handled divorces (representing both fathers and mothers); criminal cases (representing criminal defendants and victims of crime); evictions (representing both landlords and tenants); protection order cases; and I have handled a variety of civil (i.e., non-criminal) cases including breach of contract, personal injury, boundary disputes, involuntary commitments, dependencies, guardianships, farm partnership dissolutions, and appellate cases. I have sat as a judicial officer in one form or another for 13+ years.
The cases that come before the court are high stakes; they invariably concern the most important issue that a party is currently facing in his or her life. It would not be fair to the litigants to have their case heard by a Judge who lacked the necessary experience. I possess that experience.
Judicial elections in Washington State are non-partisan. A Superior Court Judge's duty is to rule on the facts of cases as they come before the court; it is not a trial Judge's role to make new law. As a Judge, it would be my responsibility to independently and fairly consider each case that comes before me. Being beholden to no political party, I can ensure that I am able to fulfill that duty.
Superior Court is the general jurisdiction trial court for the State of Washington. The largest volume of cases heard in Superior Court are family law cases and felony criminal cases. The Court also hears protection order requests, evictions, juvenile cases (criminal cases, dependencies, truancies, etc.), appeals from District Court and state administrative agencies, involuntary commitments, and a wide variety of civil disputes. Appeals from Superior Court would be heard by the Washington State Court of Appeals initially, and then (if discretionary review is granted) by the Washington State Supreme Court.
(By contrast, a Washington State District Court hears misdemeanor cases, small claims cases, infractions, and civil disputes where the amount in controversy is $100,000 or less, and other cases.)
In Whitman County, there is one Superior Court Judge, and one District Court Judge.
